iPhone 12 Leaks: How Accurate Were They?

In April 2020, the iPhone SE 2020 had just launched, and the rumor mill turned to the next big release: the iPhone 12 series. Leaked CAD renders and reports from the period promised a major redesign with flat edges, smaller bezels, and 5G support.

Six years later, the full story is known. The iPhone 12, iPhone 12 mini, iPhone 12 Pro, and iPhone 12 Pro Max shipped in October and November 2020. This retrospective checks each major leak against what Apple actually released.

Display and Design: The Leaks Nailed It

The leaks predicted a 6.7-inch panel for the iPhone 12 Pro Max, up from 6.5 inches on the iPhone 11 Pro Max. That was correct. The Pro Max shipped with a 6.7-inch Super Retina XDR OLED display, while the standard iPhone 12 got a 6.1-inch panel.

The biggest design prediction was the return to a flat stainless steel frame. That also came true. Apple dropped the rounded edges of the iPhone 11 generation for the squared-off look last seen on the iPhone 5, and every model in the lineup shared it.

Bezels, Camera, and LiDAR

Reports claimed bezels would shrink from about 2.52mm to 1.55mm. The real bezels were slightly larger than the leak suggested, but they were visibly thinner than the iPhone 11 series. Screen real estate improved across the board.

Camera leaks pointed to a larger module and a possible LiDAR scanner. Apple delivered exactly that. The iPhone 12 Pro and Pro Max gained a LiDAR scanner for better low-light autofocus and AR depth sensing, while the regular iPhone 12 and mini skipped it. Connectivity: 5G Yes, USB-C No

Leaks were split on connectivity. The antenna band redesign, from 1mm to 1.83mm, was reported as a sign of 5G support. That was right: every iPhone 12 model shipped with 5G, making it Apple’s first 5G lineup.

The same leaks hoped for USB-C, but the CAD renders showed Lightning, and that is what shipped. Apple kept the Lightning port on the iPhone 12 series. The SIM tray also moved to the opposite side as predicted, another detail the renders got right.

Release Date and Battery

Early reports expected a September 2020 announcement with shipping to follow in October. COVID-19 shifted the plan. Apple announced the lineup on October 13, 2020, with the iPhone 12 and 12 Pro shipping October 23, and the mini and Pro Max arriving November 13.

Battery predictions were also close. The larger chassis allowed higher capacity batteries to support the power draw of 5G, and the Pro Max shipped with the biggest battery Apple had put in an iPhone at the time.

What the Leaks Missed

No rumor cycle is perfect. The leaks did not predict MagSafe, the magnetic charging and accessory system that became a signature iPhone feature. They also missed the iPhone 12 mini, the smallest modern iPhone, which did not appear in the early CAD renders.

iPhone 12 Today in 2026

Owners still use the iPhone 12 series daily. The flat design defined Apple’s look for several generations, and the phones remain capable for everyday tasks, including running as a webcam for streaming and video calls. If you are buying one used in 2026, check the battery health and confirm it runs a recent iOS version.
