How the Motorola Contactless Charging Demo Worked

Motorola published a video showing two smartphones placed roughly 80cm and 100cm away from a desktop charging station. Both phones started charging without touching any pad or cable. The station beamed power through the air, which was a big deal at a time when most wireless charging still required the phone to sit directly on a coil.

The most interesting part of the demo was the safety mechanism. When a hand was placed in front of the charging dock, the power delivery stopped automatically. That mattered because a charging beam powerful enough to top up a phone could be dangerous if it hit a person or a pet, and the auto-stop feature was Motorola’s way of addressing the concern.

Why Over-the-Air Charging Never Reached Phones
