Why Restart Discord?

Discord, like any complex desktop application, can run into temporary issues that a simple restart fixes. Common symptoms include:

  • Failure to launch – the app gets stuck on the loading screen or does not open at all.
  • Missing content – servers, channels, or direct messages fail to load properly.
  • Mic or audio problems – your microphone stops working mid-call, or you cannot hear others.
  • Push-to-talk stops responding – the hotkey no longer activates your mic.
  • General sluggishness – the app feels slow or unresponsive.

A quick restart resolves nearly all of these. If the problem persists after a restart, try one of the deeper fixes below.

How to Restart Discord on Windows

Method 1: Standard Restart

Right-click the Discord icon in the system tray (bottom-right corner of your screen) and select Quit Discord. Wait a few seconds, then launch Discord again from the Start menu or desktop shortcut.

Method 2: Force Close via Task Manager

If Discord is frozen and will not close normally:

  1. Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
  2. Find Discord in the list of processes.
  3. Right-click it and select End Task.
  4. Launch Discord again from the Start menu.

Method 3: Compatibility Troubleshooter

If Discord refuses to launch at all:

  1. Right-click the Discord desktop shortcut and select Troubleshoot Compatibility.
  2. Choose Try Recommended Settings. This runs Discord with Windows compatibility defaults.
  3. If the issue continues, run the troubleshooter again and select Troubleshoot Program.
  4. Check The program worked in an earlier version of Windows but will not install or run now.
  5. Select Windows 8 as the compatibility mode and proceed.

How to Fully Reset Discord (Clean Slate)

If a standard restart does not help, a full reset clears corrupted cache and settings files. This is the most effective fix for persistent problems like a black screen on launch.

  1. Press Win+R to open the Run dialog.
  2. Type %appdata% and press Enter. This opens the AppData Roaming folder.
  3. Locate the Discord folder, right-click it, and select Delete.
  4. Close the folder and launch Discord again. The app will regenerate fresh configuration files.

If the black screen persists after resetting, a clean reinstall is the next step. Uninstall Discord completely using Windows Settings > Apps, then download the latest version from the official Discord website.

How to Restart Discord on Mac

  1. Click the Discord icon in the menu bar (top-right) and select Quit.
  2. Alternatively, press Command+Q while Discord is the active window.
  3. Open Discord again from the Applications folder or Launchpad.

If the app is unresponsive, force quit by pressing Option+Command+Esc, selecting Discord, and clicking Force Quit.

How to Refresh Discord

Refreshing is different from restarting. A refresh reloads the current Discord interface without closing the entire application. Use it for minor issues like:

  • New messages not appearing.
  • Friend statuses showing incorrectly (offline when active, or vice versa).
  • A channel freezes and stops updating.
  • Push-to-talk stops working temporarily.

Refresh on Windows

Press Ctrl+R while Discord is the active window. The interface reloads instantly.

Refresh on Mac

Press Command+R while Discord is focused. The app refreshes without closing.

Refresh on Mobile (Android & iOS)

Discord does not have a dedicated refresh shortcut on mobile. Swipe down on the channel list to trigger a manual refresh. If that does not work, close the app completely from the recent apps menu and reopen it.

How to Restart Discord Bot

If you run a Discord bot and need to restart it:

  1. Open your bot’s command console or terminal.
  2. Type refresh or restart (depending on your bot framework).
  3. Some bots also support the !restart command directly in the Discord channel if properly configured.

Preventive Tips to Avoid Discord Issues

  • Keep Discord updated. The desktop app checks for updates on launch, but you can manually trigger an update by pressing Ctrl+R (Windows) or Command+R (Mac).
  • Clear your Discord cache periodically. Navigate to %appdata%/discord/Cache on Windows or ~/Library/Caches/discord on Mac and delete the contents.
  • Disable hardware acceleration in Discord settings (User Settings > Advanced > Hardware Acceleration) if you experience frequent crashes.
  • Check your antivirus or firewall settings Discord is sometimes blocked by security software.

How do I refresh Discord on Windows?

Press Ctrl+R while Discord is the active window to refresh the interface.

How do I refresh Discord on Mac?

Press Command+R while Discord is focused to refresh the app.

How to restart Discord bot?

Open your bot’s console and type refresh or restart. Some bots support the !restart command in the Discord channel.

How do I completely reset Discord?

Delete the Discord folder in %appdata% (Windows) or ~/Library/Application Support/discord (Mac), then relaunch the app.

Does refreshing Discord log you out?

No. Refreshing with Ctrl+R or Command+R simply reloads the UI. You stay logged in.
