Amid the lockdown in many countries, initiatives have been taken to promote online education more and more throughout the world. Read-Along is one of Google’s initiatives targetting children in your home.

Read-Along

This won’t be new to the Indian consumers as this application was launched as Google Bolo in India around March 2019. This was targeted for children staying at home learning with the support of their parents. It was a success in India and now looks like Google decided to push it forward throughout the world.

Read-Along is made for children of 5+ years and helping them learn through recognizing their audio and giving them appropriate feedback. Read-Along uses Google’s speech recognition technology for audio input.

Google has launched the application in 180 countries now with the support of 9 languages currently including English, Hindi, Spanish, and Portuguese. Google says the app will develop accordingly with the feedback from the parents.

How It Works

The Application helps your kid learn with the help of an app study partner named Diya. Looks like the Indian touch in the application will be rolled out worldwide. As the kids read out the words, the speech recognition technology in the application analyzes the words if they’re pronounced wrong or if they’re correct. The positive or negative feedback given by Diya is similar to the feedback parent or teachers give to the students. If -children are having a tough time pronouncing the words, they can tap on Diya to know the correct way to speak.

Read-Along has stories built-in from all over the world to keep your children engaged in the tasks. Along with all this, they are awarded badges and stars to keep them motivated and on track. This helps to prevent boredom sooner than regular methods of teaching.

Parents also get option to create different profiles to track the progress of each and every individual. Read-Along also sets the difficulties of the stories according to the results of each and every child.

Safety and Privacy

Parents can download the stories and save them offline for their children. This makes sure your children don’t have unattended access to the Internet. Occasionally you can connect to Wifi to download more stories for them.

Also, the app can see used by anybody as it doesn’t require any login. Also, the voice data used is analyzed in the application itself and nothing is sent to the Google Servers.

Google has come with this feature throughout the world to support education and E-Learning amid the pandemic. We hope to see good updates like these in the future.
