A custom Android ROM is a modified version of Android’s firmware built by the developer community. Since Android is open source, developers can alter the appearance, behavior, and feature set of the operating system. Anyone with access to the source code can modify the system, recompile it, and release it for a wide range of devices.

People turn to custom ROMs when their smartphone manufacturer stops pushing updates. Developers step in to keep older devices up to date with the latest Android versions. The best part is that custom ROMs are completely free for everyone to use and distribute.

When you buy an Android device, it comes with what is called a stock ROM or stock firmware. These refer to the preinstalled software from the manufacturer, which often includes bloatware and limited customization options. By flashing a custom ROM, you can unlock additional features, improve performance, and extend the life of your device.

To install a custom ROM on your handset, you must have an unlocked bootloader and a custom recovery option like TWRP installed. Always take a full backup of your current ROM before flashing to avoid issues. You may want to roll back to your stock ROM if you encounter any problems with the custom ROM.

You can download ROMs from XDA-Developers along with OpenGApps. Some devices have strong developer support while others have very little. Some ROMs come with GApps preinstalled, while others require you to flash GApps separately alongside the ROM.

1. Pixel Experience

Pixel Experience, also known as PE, is an AOSP-based ROM that delivers the Pixel device experience with GCam support, Pixel live wallpapers, icons, fonts, and boot animations. The primary goal of this ROM is to provide a stable experience with necessary features and up-to-date security patches. You get the same buttery smooth animations found on Pixel lineup devices with minimal customization options. This is one of the most stable ROMs available and supports more devices than most alternatives.

Pixel Experience is a great choice for people around the world. It is safe to install as long as you download from the official website. This open-source ROM receives OTA updates that fix bugs and keep your device up to date with the latest security patches and Android versions. If you want more features, Pixel Experience Plus offers additional customization options beyond the stock Pixel ROM.

3. Resurrection Remix OS

Resurrection Remix OS, also known as RR, was once the king of Android customization. Unfortunately, the development team is no longer active and RR is stuck on Android Pie. Even though the ROM no longer receives official support, other developers continue to use RR’s code to build different ROMs. It still has a dedicated fan base worldwide and works well on devices that manufacturers have abandoned.

4. LineageOS

Many of you have heard the name CyanogenMod. It was discontinued and rebranded as LineageOS. CyanogenMod was originally built to tweak, modify, and improve the usability of Android devices. The HTC Dream (G1) was the first device where modders gained root access and installed custom ROMs, and CyanogenMod paved the way for countless custom ROMs that followed.

Based on Google’s AOSP code with custom additions, LineageOS serves as both a standalone ROM and the source code foundation for many other custom ROMs. It gives you flexibility while maintaining stability and security. LineageOS remains one of the most actively developed and widely supported ROMs in 2026.

It is a lightweight ROM that has become very popular among mobile gamers because of its small resource footprint. Games run faster and smoother with crDroid, and you will not experience lag or heating issues.

crDroid is based on AOSP and uses LineageOS as its foundation. It offers customization options while maintaining a stock Android experience. Think of it as LineageOS with more customization options. With each new update, stability and performance continue to improve.
