Windows Update is essential for keeping your system secure and running smoothly. But when it gets stuck at “Downloading” or “Installing” for hours, it can be incredibly frustrating. The good news is that most Windows 11 update hangs are easy to fix with the right approach. Here are 8 proven methods to get your updates moving again.

Contents
  • 1. Restart Your Computer and Try Again
  • 2. Run the Windows Update Troubleshooter
  • 3. Clear the SoftwareDistribution Folder
  • 4. Free Up Disk Space
  • 5. Run DISM and SFC Scans
  • 6. Reset Windows Update Components
  • 7. Use the Windows Update Assistant
  • 8. Perform an In-Place Upgrade
  • Final Thoughts

1. Restart Your Computer and Try Again

This sounds too simple, but it works more often than you would expect. Sometimes a background process gets stuck and a clean restart clears it.

Click Start, select Power, and choose Restart. Do not use Shut Down, because Windows 11 uses Fast Startup which does not fully reset the update service. A proper restart gives the Windows Update system a clean slate.

After the restart, go to Settings > Windows Update and click Check for Updates. If the update resumes normally, you are good to go.

2. Run the Windows Update Troubleshooter

Windows 11 has a built-in troubleshooter that detects and fixes common update problems automatically.

Open Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters. Scroll down to Windows Update and click Run. The tool will scan for issues like corrupted update files, incorrect permissions, and stuck services. Follow the on-screen instructions and let it apply any fixes it finds.

After the troubleshooter completes, restart your PC and check for updates again.

3. Clear the SoftwareDistribution Folder

Windows stores temporary update files in the SoftwareDistribution folder. If these files become corrupted, updates get stuck. Clearing this folder forces Windows to download fresh copies.

Press Windows + R, type “services.msc” and press Enter. Find “Windows Update” in the list, right click it, and select Stop. Do the same for “Background Intelligent Transfer Service” (BITS).

Now open File Explorer and navigate to C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution. Delete everything inside this folder. You may need administrator permission, which is normal. Go back to the Services window, right click “Windows Update” and select Start. Also restart BITS.

Go to Settings > Windows Update and check for updates. Windows will download the update files from scratch.

4. Free Up Disk Space

Windows Update needs free space to download and install updates. If your system drive is almost full, updates can stall.

Open Settings > System > Storage. Look at the Storage usage bar. If your C: drive has less than 10 GB free, you need to make room. Click “Cleanup recommendations” and let Windows suggest files to remove. Focus on Temporary files, Previous Windows installations, and Recycle Bin.

You can also run Disk Cleanup by typing “cleanmgr” in the Start menu. Select your system drive and check “Temporary Windows installation files” and “Delivery Optimization Files”. Click OK to delete.

5. Run DISM and SFC Scans

Corrupted system files can block Windows Update from working properly. The DISM (Deployment Imaging Service and Management) tool and SFC (System File Checker) can repair them.

Open Start, type “cmd”, right click Command Prompt, and select “Run as administrator”.

Run this command first: DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth. This scans and repairs the Windows system image. It may take 15 to 30 minutes. Let it finish completely.

After DISM completes, run: sfc /scannow. This checks all protected system files and replaces any corrupted ones. Restart your PC after both commands finish, then check for updates.

6. Reset Windows Update Components

If the update service itself is damaged, resetting all related components can fix it. This is more thorough than clearing just the SoftwareDistribution folder.

Open Command Prompt as administrator and run these commands one at a time:

net stop wuauserv
net stop cryptSvc
net stop bits
net stop msiserver

Then rename the update folders: ren C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old and ren C:\Windows\System32\catroot2 catroot2.old

Finally restart the services: net start wuauserv, net start cryptSvc, net start bits, net start msiserver

Close the command prompt and check for updates in Settings.

7. Use the Windows Update Assistant

If the built-in updater is completely broken, Microsoft provides a standalone tool called the Windows Update Assistant. It forces the latest feature update onto your system directly, bypassing the normal update pipeline.

Download the Windows Update Assistant from the official Microsoft website. Run the tool and click “Update Now”. It will download and install the latest Windows 11 version. This process can take an hour or more, but it often works when nothing else does.

After installation, your system will be fully updated. Future updates should work normally again.

8. Perform an In-Place Upgrade

This is the nuclear option, but it preserves all your files and applications. An in-place upgrade reinstalls Windows 11 while keeping your personal data, settings, and installed programs intact.

Download the Windows 11 Installation Assistant or the Media Creation Tool from Microsoft. Run the installer and select “Upgrade this PC now”. Choose “Keep personal files and apps” when prompted. The installation takes about an hour.

After completion, your system will be fresh but all your data remains. Windows Update will work correctly because the core system files have been rebuilt.

Final Thoughts

Stuck Windows updates are almost always fixable without reinstalling Windows. Start with the simple fixes (restart, troubleshooter) and work your way through the list. Most users find that clearing the SoftwareDistribution folder or running DISM and SFC resolves the issue.

If you regularly encounter stuck updates, check your disk space and make sure you have at least 20 GB free on your system drive. Consider setting active hours in Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options so updates install when you are not using your PC.

And if all else fails, the Windows Update Assistant or an in-place upgrade will get you back on track without losing any of your files or applications.
